What are Air Source Heat Pumps?

Air Source Heat Pumps are a cleaner way of providing heat and hot water for your home. They are more efficient than a traditional boiler and they do not burn fossil fuel directly. Instead, they use warmth from the outside air and are classed as a renewable source of heating.

What are the benefits?

  • Lower your carbon footprint and save the planet

Heat pumps can reduce emissions by up to 73%.

  • Up to 4x more efficient than conventional heating

Central heating pumps require less energy to heat than traditional boilers.

  • Twice the lifespan (up to 20 years) with less maintenance

Very little maintenance is required once installed.

  • Government incentives - save £5,000 off your new system

Utilising available government grants can considerably lower a heat pump cost.

How Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

  • Step 1 Icon

Heat is absorbed from the cold air from outside, via a heat exchanger.

  • Step 2 Icon

This cold air is warm enough to boil the sub-zero refrigerant liquid and turn it into gas

  • Step 3 Icon

The air heat pump then compresses that gas and heats it up even more.

  • Step 4 Icon

That heated gas is hot enough to be pumped into your home, via the heater exchanger and circulation pump.

  • Step 5 Icon

The heat is then transferred to your central heating system, warming your radiators and charging your hot water tank.

*for heat pumps to heat your home effectively, they need to work in conjunction with the correct pipework and adequate home insulation.

Common Heat Pump Misconceptions

  • Installing a heat pump will mean a lot of changes to my home

Heat pumps still use the same emitter types as a traditional boiler (radiators) but do also work well with underfloor heating. They require a modern storage cylinder to be fitted but there are slimline options for most circumstances. The main change you will find is the unit situated outside of the property, rather than indoor differences.

  • An air-source heat pump will not provide sufficient water or heating for my home

Before we fit any heat pump we always conduct an in-depth room-by-room heat loss survey of the property to ensure we recommend the appropriate unit. Heat pumps operate in a more efficient manner than traditional boilers. As long as the right system is put in place it will absolutely provide the required heat for your home.

  • A Heat Pump is large and will take up too much space

A Heat Pump unit required for a typical 2-bed home is actually quite a compact size (about the size of an air con unit) and will fit on most properties within the required building and manufacturer guidelines.

  • Heat pumps are loud and will make too much noise

We will perform a noise test calculation as part of the initial survey to access if there are any implications with the distances involved. To date, we have never had any issues with installations or any complaints about noise.

  • Heat pumps are expensive and I won't get a return on my investment

Heat pump grants are available for up to £5,000, and the costs are VAT free (including all materials). In some cases, there are also mortgage lender cash-back incentives on offer of up to a further £2,000. They last longer, can reduce energy bills and require less maintenance than traditional heating too. There has never been a better time to consider installing an air source heat pump in your property.

  • The installation process will be lengthy and highly disruptive to my home

Retrofitting a property with an air source heat pump can be done in as little as a couple of days. Depending on the existing heating and fuel source, pipework and radiators, this may increase but we rarely see heat pump installation projects lasting longer than 5 days.

Our ultimate aim is to ensure that you are completely satisfied with our services and that your home is equipped with the best heating solution for your specific requirements.

Explore the steps we take to provide the best possible service

01

Free initial expert consultation

We start your enquiry with a phone consultation. One of our experts will be on hand to discuss your thoughts and answer any questions regarding the process. We’ll look to understand your current heating set-up and any circumstances that may effect what can be achieved.

02

Heat loss survey and design

Next, we’ll organise a full, detailed room-by-room heat loss survey of the property. This important step is time-consuming and incurs travel expenses for our team, therefore we charge for this. The outcome is a vital HLR document, which considers your current energy requirement and output and provides a future comparison for cost savings.

03

BUS Voucher application

Once we have got the design and size of the system we will analyse the data to produce a technical radiator/heat emitter schedule. We’ll consult with you on the likely materials required and apply for the BUS voucher on an agreed provisional quote on your behalf. We will undertake all the administrative processes to get the voucher authorised.

04

Tech survey and quote

Whilst this is underway we will undertake a thorough technical survey to itemise the specific components, fixtures and fittings needed for the installation and produce a formal quote for the works.

05

Installation

Once the quote has been accepted we will handover from our back office and sales team to our installation manager who will organise an installation date, procurement of materials and labour, and any requirements necessary for your installation. We follow MCS standards of both installation and quality management/compliance - meaning the highest standards are adhered to every step of the way.

06

Commissioning and handover

Once we have completed the installation and commissioned the new heating system, we take payment and send out all the necessary handover and commissioning documentation. This includes warranty information and the MCS lodgement to the MIS database. You are now complete.

Frequently Asked Heat Pump Questions

  • Do I need to change the radiators?

Following a heat loss survey, this would be established. Generally speaking as a heat pump circulates water at a lower temperature than a conventional gas boiler. It is not uncommon for radiator changing requirements but it is very much dependent on the analysis from the room-by-room heat loss survey we would undertake at the property in question.

  • Do I need to change the pipework?

Subject to both survey and customer discretion, pipework can sometimes need to be changed but it very much depends on what is currently on site and what the sizing of the unit as determined by the heat loss survey. Sometimes, power-flushing the existing pipework is what makes the most sense and we will work on a property-by-property basis.

  • How much does it cost to install a heat pump?

A rough guide to heat pump installation cost is roughly 10k-17k depending on variables such as pipework and radiators and unit size and cylinder. If you are eligible for the BUS scheme you will have £5,000 paid by the government, all materials are VAT free and there are also cashback schemes available with certain mortgage lenders who offer further discounts (up to £2,000 for current customers). Therefore the cost of installing a heat pump can be significantly decreased depending on your circumstances.

  • Do I need a hot water cylinder?

In most cases, you will need a cylinder. There are hybrid systems available where an existing (if compatible) gas combi or new combi can work with the heat pump under certain temperature variables where it flicks between both energy sources, however, these are not available on the BUS scheme.

  • How long does it take to install?

Anything between 2 to 5 days in most normal circumstances. As experienced air source heat pump installers, we will be able to provide quotations and time estimates after visiting your property.
